    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 17 часов назад

      Thank you, its fun doing these videos and it is wonderful to know that you are appreciating our efforts. As you may have noted, we grow (and test) lots of Hydrangeas (we currently list over 122 types: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Hydrangea), and amongst these, the panicle hydrangea selections feature heavily. David's favorite top three would be: Hydrangea Early Evolution: ruclips.net/video/wp46lQ9PHlI/видео.html (hardy, compact, and above all early flowering - a great way to start off the flowering season). Hydrangea WorryFree® Ruby Snow: ruclips.net/video/9vgGc654--U/видео.html (compact, bushy, free flowering, sturdy and long lasting). Hydrangea WorryFree® Love a Lot Pink: ruclips.net/video/JEGICVsIhg8/видео.html Here in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, they can be obtained at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. but with you in your region, they may not have reached there yet, so make a note, and ask around, because sooner or later (at least) some of them are likely to turn up as they become better known about. We hope this helps. Also, have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. Sometimes insects visit the double flowers with multiple petals, but if you want to attract pollinators then single or semi-double flowered selections will be more effective. Those are fine trees indeed. They look to be grafted- or even double grafted, top and bottom. If so, do you know what the rootstock and/or interstem is. Of course they could be just trained to a standard form, but they just look too heavy for that to be the case. Those are the best that I have ever seen ( including mine)

      Thank you for your question. Our Cercis plants are "bottom worked" (grafted at the base on Cercis canadensis seedlings). We grow them in our "pot n pot" system (a plunged pot in the ground with drip irrigation. You might also be interested to know that all our trees go though a special process to prevent "root girdling" so that they develop a fibrous network of roots which means of course that they transplant well into their new locations and are more stable later in life. This link: ruclips.net/video/SNu2CI10oF0/видео.html to another of our videos will explain more. We hope this helps helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? I have 10 of these EE, obtained in 2022 and 2023. I like them very much but I have noticed that while some are full of flowers others can be such that several branches are without flowers at all.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 2 дня назад

      Thanks for watching and letting us know. We are pleased to hear that you are enjoying this outstanding selection too. The flowers are produced on "old wood" (stems that were formed the previous summer). That's how they then grow out and produce all these wonderful, very early flowers. If young vigorous plants (like yours), put on a lot of new growth late in the summer or even the following spring, there may not be enough time for flower buds to form, and that's why you are seeing the branches without flowers. That's why this type of Panicle Hydrangea should not be pruned in spring. As your plants mature (and do not need to produce the vigorous growth that is needed to form a well structured branch formation on young specimens), you will find that naturally, they will settle down to produce shorter, stockier branches that will (of course), carry plenty of flowers in years to come. In a way, it is good that your plants are doing this, because that shows that they are growing well, settling in nicely, and making an established root system and branch formation that will put them in good stead for the years ahead. we hope this helps to explain what is happening to your lovely plants. Have you subscribed to our channel? • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 2 дня назад

      Thanks for asking. You are almost correct in your attempt to identify David's accent! He hails originally from Northern Ireland (which of course is "next door" to Scotland), and therefore his accent sounds a bit like a Scots brogue. He rolls his "R's", often comes out with words like "Wee", "Aye" and "Augh", and when he gets excited about good garden plants (which is frequently), it is not unusual for us to hear words.... that we've never heard before! 😅👍 Thanks for watching. • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 6 дней назад

      They should come back to give you (at least) another round of flowering, just make sure to mulch and water them well until they get established. This season will really be an establishment year, but they still should flower. Next year, depending upon the variety you should see bigger flowers, stronger stems and much stronger rebloom. Some rebloom better than others, but you will see them get better once they settle in and get adjusted to their new home. Have you subscribed to our channel? Hi Mr. Wilson, I have black and blue Salvia in my garden. They had their first flush but I neglected to cut them back. Now we're in a heat wave and I'm afraid to cut them. I live in middle Georgia, USA. Should I leave them alone. Thankyou 😊

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 3 дня назад

      Thanks for reaching out to us. Salvia 'Black and Blue' is another sort of Salvia (its a huge plant family). It is not reliably hardy as a perennial in our region, so we don't grow and sell it through our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ That said, it is widely grown here as an annual, and David has it in pots on his deck mainly for it wonderful color and attracting hummingbirds. You have probably noticed that it is vigorous and strong growing, and tends to have a rather open, "rangy" habit. David says, that if it gets too tall and wide, it is perfectly possible to trim it because in a few weeks it will regrow and flower again. He goes on to mention that as young plants, he makes a point of pinching out the tips on the growing shoots, this builds a bushy, well-formed plant at the start and if this is carried on through the season will produce lots of shoots that of course carry all of those wonderful dark purple/blue flowers. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you put in your zip code into this locator link: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ it will help you find all the places all over the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states that carry our Grown By Overdevest plants. It is up to each place to determine what varieties they stock, so if you are looking for a specific plant, it might be wise to call ahead. Of course, when you visit, you should see lots of other pretty and outstanding things (many of which are featured in our videos). It often pays to have a chat with the plant experts at these centers too, because they will probably be able to guide you with local guidance, and if they don't actually have something in stock at that time they may consent to try to get it for you too. Yes, it is rather unusual, and great to have because deer do not like the taste of the foliage and also it is a wonderful 4 season plant - even looking good in winter. Just make sure you plant it in a well-drained site. Spurges are wonderful drought tolerant plants (once established) but they just will not survive in wet, soggy conditions. Thanks for the Sub., and welcome on board. We think, you are really going to enjoy having your True Boom roses. Congratulations! Ping Lim (the breeder) has developed a wonderful breeding line, and in our trials we are seeing more with exciting potential, so stay tuned. They have (of course), been developed from different genetic lineages, which is partly why they are so distinctive and different, but the underlying common denominator is vigor on their own roots, large flowers, repeat or continual blooming, and the most important factor (in our opinion) good garden performance which includes outstanding disease resistance. All things we look for in our trials, and are proud to offer through our network of partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. Ping says "he breeds roses with 'Chi" (vigor and vitality), and that means you can dead head them vigorously (or even "summer prune" them) and they will bounce back abundantly, which is (no doubt) what you are seeing too in your plants. Some will set hips and need to be deadheaded, but our "TOP PERFORMER" - True Bloom True Passion (as you've probably noted in our video, also here on this channel): ruclips.net/video/eVstGvAD4RQ/видео.html, does not set many hips, so that's why it keeps on flowering and flowering, and doesn't need to be deadheaded. Thanks again for the sub. Stay in touch, and let us all know how you are getting on with your lovely roses.

      They will flower, but later in the season because they have to make the stem growth first, which of course is why this selection is so popular. Its beautiful, bright red stems stand out so well during the winter months. The flower on this type of Dogwood is not really very showy, which is why we are thinking that perhaps you are possibly confusing it with another sort.... The Flowering Dogwoods... An example of which is the incredible Cornus 'Scarlet Fire': ruclips.net/video/VODN6Y4KPA4/видео.htmlsi=O0DAMaxJId9JhTNQ This one grows into a small tree and does not have pretty colored stems, but man, does it have gorgeous flowers. • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 12 дней назад

      You could do that, and if so, make sure to water it well when you replant it. Alternatively, a better option (since it is now probably beginning to get rooted in), might be to mound up an inch or so, of extra compost and soil mixture in a ring around your plant, this will allow the plant to make new roots up nearer the surface. The reason for the deeper planting is to allow the plant to have a cooler crown and also break from lower down inside the crown if anything were to happen to the top growth. Clematis love, is a cool root system (something that David refers to in this video (also on this channel), here's a link: ruclips.net/video/Z69fP7r0-7o/видео.htmlsi=uexfD7NfsptrYfzI that will explain. That's why putting down a 2" deep layer of mulch and regular watering (until the plant gets established) is important. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? My wife and I absolutely love your channel, very detailed and helpful. We planted 8 violet profusion 2 years ago, and they have really taken off. This year, we've had a lot of rain, and we noticed they were being attacked by some type of pest (we did see many earwigs) the leaves looked awful, and lace like. We did treat for bugs. Shortly thereafter, the leaves mainly on the bottom, but also in the middle were yellow, brown spots, getting brown and crispy. Maybe a fungus or a reaction to the pests. Not sure. We cut them almost all the way down to about an inch, removed all the dead foliage and cleaned up all around the plants. Do you think we will still get a 2nd bloom? Does it take a long time to re-grow? Also, would you suggest a fertilizer, or just wait as they seemed to be stressed right now? We are just so upset about it. Normally this is when we are getting such a beautiful bloom from them. Thanks for any input !

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 14 дней назад

      First, thank you for your kind compliment re: our channel, it is great to hear you are appreciating our efforts. Secondly, we are sorry to learn of your problems with your Violet Profusion plants. It is hard to tell without seeing the plants and their surroundings (that's where an Extension Agent or knowledgeable Master Gardener comes in), they could more accurately help with a diagnosis and remedy. Certainly, it sounds like perhaps there's several things going on..... bugs eating the foliage and leaving it lacy looking), and perhaps a disease issue with the yellowing foliage and spots (although its natural for plants to have a bit of this in the center of clumps - even on healthy, thriving plants. However, (and this is just a hunch) the main issue could be drainage related - i.e. root damage sustained in heavy, saturated soil when the plants were dormant in winter and early spring and then exacerbated in this cold, wet spring. One thing these types of Salvias need is REALLY GOOD drainage.... and if your plants were sitting in wet conditions (even when they were dormant) they would have sustained root rot and then would be unable to root out again when conditions improve and then actually struggle and get stressed again when things turn dry! Pests (and diseases) often have an uncanny ability to hone in on weak or struggling plants, so these effects may be secondary. You did exactly the right thing in trimming back the plants and treating for the bugs. Now its lots of TLC, while they are in a recovery mode, don't worry about fertilizer (except possibly occasionally with a diluted solution), the main thing will (believe it or not), be watering during the summer months to nurse them back out of their weakened state and help to avoid drought stress in hot periods. The other thing David suggests is to apply a 2' deep top dressing of compost around the edges of the clumps - this will help to keep the soil moist and cool during the summer, and is great stuff for encouraging new roots to root up near the surface. Then if you reflect on this and think that your soil drainage is suspect, then this coming Autumn you should consider lifting your plants and transplanting them to a new better drained site or building up you bed with extra soil, grit or sand, so that it is raised well above the water table and then replanting them into the same area. As an extra note, if you review some of our videos filmed in our test garden, you will see that our beds are all raised up for the same reasons as outlined above. Obviously, we would defer to a on site diagnosis, but knowing Salvias and their need for a good, free draining situation - we think this might be where the under lying issue is. We hope this helps. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel? My 4 year old died of unknown reasons. At the beginning of last winter, after I pruned it drastically, due to the unusually warm weather, it started to release buds. I removed them to let her know that winter is coming. After that, she didn't release anything in the spring and it looks dead. I am very sorry because I gave her everything she needed and every spring she was beautiful. I don't know what to do with her. The tree still looks strong.

      Hard to know, but certainly now that we are entering the dry summer, watering and more TLC is important. Willows are robust and resilient and there's a good chance it will re-sprout and get going again. They love plenty of moisture at their roots, so that's why watering is important. we hope this helps. I have three of these and the aphids have taken over. I’ve tried everything to control them, but I haven’t had any luck. It’s a shame because the flowers this variety produces are so beautiful. :(

      The trick is to try to catch the aphids early on before they get a chance to multiply. They love the young, juicy shoots on roses. So. it might be worth making a note to inspect your plants regularly next spring starting after bud break. Then as soon as you see the first sign of them, try to take care of the "pioneers" before they get multiplying. Its a lot easier (and better for the plants) to catch them early on. Thanks for sharing this. Spiraeas and very reliable and resilient, and as you've discovered, they respond well to trimming too. So removing old spent flower heads, tired or diseased foliage is a good way to rejuvenate them and keep them bushy and colorful too. Plus obviously, removing the diseased foliage helps to reduce the opportunity for the disease spores to spread or re-infect too. Have you subscribed to our channel? Thanks for reaching out to us, and yes we are happy to tell you that we grow Miscanthus 'Oktoberfest' (along with several other exciting new selections including some neat infertile selections that you might also want to check out - here on this channel). They are available through our network of partnering garden centers and if you click on this link: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ you'll be able to discover where all these places are located. Just be aware that because we try to ship out our plants when they are coming up to their prime, it may mean that sometimes we are "in between crops" which may cause a delay in supply and also, not every store carries every plant that we grow (its up to the experts there, whether they stock individual varieties or not). So when you contact them, they will be able to let you know the status of availability, and sometimes they might even be able to get them in for you. meanwhile, have you subscribed to our channel yet? Why does your site say they get 8-10 feet wide when most other sites say junior giants only get 3-5 feet wide??

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 17 дней назад

      It depends upon the stage that you measure it at - older or younger! (i.e. 12, 15' or 20") and whether the plants were trimmed or not! Also, since this is a relatively new selection, we suspect some of this might be what they believe is an estimated size. Finally, in our data points, we try to take a conservative approach, so that's why we would rather rather err on the side of caution. And since evergreens like this live longer, are better furnished at the base, and perform better when given wider spacings, we would rather provide guidance that encourages wider spacings. We hope this helps clarify things a little better. Have you subscribed to our channel? • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries 17 дней назад

      Thank you, as you've noticed we like the informal look too. We suppose it depends on setting - older traditional homes or situations where the formal look fits in etc. Evergreens like Boxwood are valuable "anchor" plants and when planted in informal numbers 3s, 5's 7's etc. provide terrific interest all-year-round, plus of course, they are seldom bothered by deer, which is big thing here in our region. If you lift them with a good rootball in the autumn or early spring, they usually transplant well, and of course our partnering garden centers will be able to fix you up with healthy, well shaped, premium sized new plants too. So, if you want to invest in some of the ones that David mentions in this video that are not suspectable to things like Leaf miner and Boxwood blight then they would get you off to a great start too. @OverdevestNurseries 17 дней назад

      You are very welcome, it is nice to know that you've found it helpful. To answer your question, if they are not trimmed back they will still probably produce some flowers, but there won't be as many, the flowers will be smaller and the plant will be "woodier" and not look as healthy and pretty. If you leave the seed heads on, this will encourage the plant to stop flowering sooner. You might get some seedlings, but these will not come true to type and will most likely be inferior.
